Open enrollment for Marketplace Insurance Plans starts November 1st, 2015, and remains open until February 1st, 2016. For those who don’t have health insurance, the time to sign up for coverage is quickly approaching, and Maine Family Planning is here to help.
Last year, we helped over 900 Mainers find and enroll in an affordable plan; we can help you find coverage this year.
Reproductive health care is essential for well-being and success. The ability to decide whether and when to have children allows people to pursue education, fulfilling careers, and to raise safe and healthy families if or when they’re ready. As important as reproductive health care is, it’s not the only kind of care people need. That’s why Maine Family Planning will be helping patients and their families enroll in affordable health insurance plans– we want Mainers to be covered for ALL of their healthcare needs, including Primary Care, prescriptions, and any emergencies that may come up. Maine Family Planning has always been a place where anyone can get affordable health care, regardless of insurance status. While we do accept private and public health insurance, many people who come to us are uninsured. In fact, we’re often one of the only health centers that people without health insurance can afford to visit.
What is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, makes it easier for people to get health insurance that they can actually afford. Under the ACA, essential health care services (like annual exams, cancer screenings, and prescriptions) must be covered, and health insurance plans won’t be able to deny coverage or charge more due to pre-existing conditions like diabetes, a pregnancy or disability. The ACA also requires all health insurance plans to provide birth control with no co-pay–something we support wholeheartedly!
Understanding the Health Insurance Marketplace
All states, including Maine, have online health insurance marketplaces where you can shop for health insurance and compare different plans. The Marketplace will show you a side-by-side comparison of each available plan.
Based on income and family size, Mainers may be eligible for tax credits (sometimes called “subsidies”) to help cover the cost of health insurance coverage. This calculator will give you an idea of what your monthly payment might be after tax credits are applied.
It’s really important to remember that there IS a tax penalty for not having insurance: this year, it’s $695 or 2.5% of your annual income (whichever is higher). If you’re going to have to pay anyway, why not get covered?
Figuring Out which Insurance Plan is Right for You
There are several different plans in the health insurance marketplace, and figuring out which plan is the best fit can be a challenge. Here are some of the things that will determine the cost of coverage:
- Your age
- The size of your family
- Your income
Starting NOW, Mainers can find out which plans are available in the state’s health insurance marketplace and how much each plan will cost at www.healthcare.gov. Starting November 2nd, we are offering in-person help navigating coverage options at several Maine Family Planning clinics. Contact your local Maine Family Planning to schedule a time to meet with us at our Lewiston, Augusta, Belfast and Bangor clinics, or call Mindy at (207) 248-3928 for more information.
