Q&A: Pregnancy (Am I pregnant?) Page 2

Pregnant from date rape?

I was at a party about a week and 2 days ago. I don't remember much, but I think I was date-raped and my friend told me he didn't have protection and she said he "did" it twice. I am still in high school and I don't have medical insurance. My last depo was due April 22nd and I couldn't get a new one because Medicaid discontinued my coverage. I just got a heavy bleeding for about 3 days and had cramps. (I never had cramps ever before). Also, I noticed my breasts being tender and feel a little nauseated. Could I be pregnant and if so, how do I stop it and get an STD check? Is it too late for EC? Can a store bought pregnancy test produce accurate results at this time?

First, please consider reporting this incident to the police or call the
Sexual Assault Hotline for help. That number is 1-800-871-7741 (Maine only) or the national line, if you are not in Maine, is 1-800-656-HOPE. Visit their website.

It is too late for emergency contraception at this point. A pregnancy test
from the store would be accurate at this time. If it is negative I would
recommend repeating the test in one week, then if still negative, you need to contact your closest family planning center to continue your Depo. All services are based on a sliding fee scale and you may qualify for services at no charge.

If it is positive, then your local family planning center can help you understand what your options are. Additionally, the counselors there can talk to you and help guide you through this difficult time.

It is very important that you talk to a trusted adult as soon as possible, preferably your parents. If that is not possible for you, then please contact the Hot Line listed above. Other options are a family planning counselor or a school guidance counselor. The fact that you don't have insurance will not prevent you from receiving services. You DO qualify for help and there is help out there. Please take care of yourself after this traumatic experience. Good luck.

Sex during ovulation

My husband and I had sex while I was ovulating. He pulled out before he ejaculated and then we had sex again. Is there a chance that there was still some sperm left from the first ejaculation? What are the chances of getting pregnant?

The withdrawal method probability of pregnancy is about 19% compared to the birth control pill method which has a probability of pregnancy at 5%. There is sperm left over from the first ejaculation and the timing of the second intercourse can influence their motility (movement). In the future, I would recommend that you use a more reliable form of birth control if you do not wish to become pregnant. Please visit your health care provider or family planning center to find the best method for you. Take care.

Discharge = pregnancy?

If I am discharging egg white discharge is that a sign of pregnancy or ovulating.

Discharge does not automatically mean you are pregnant. Discharge can be a sign of many things, or just a normal occurrence. There can be discharge during ovulation. There can also be discharge with some infections. If the discharge has a strong odor or strange color, and/or if you have any itching or burning, you should visit your local health care provider or family planning center to describe your symptoms. If you are sexually active, make sure you are using a reliable form of birth control. Take care.

Best time to conceive?

In general, women are likely to ovulate at mid-cycle. This is the time that you are most likely to become pregnant.

Test is negative, could I still be pregnant?

My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex in April and seeing as I wasn't on the pill at that time I didn't get my period, but I went right back on it the next month. However I experienced none of the symptoms of pregnancy, but about 2 weeks later we did a home pregnancy test and it came out negative. I have gotten my period on a regular basis since then. My question is, is there a chance of pregnancy even if the test came out negative? I have gained about 10 lbs since May and at times my stomach feels weird like wave motions. Could that be like kicking or something? I was just wondering. Thank you kindly!!!

A second pregnancy test would be in order just to rule out the chance of pregnancy although the chances are low given your regular periods. If it is negative, you may want to examine your diet since May - have you been more sedentary? Have you been consuming alcoholic beverages more regularly? Having more snack foods? Often, summertime can sneak up on us this way - our good eating habits can be challenged with summertime snacking.

Can you feel when a man ejaculates? Could I be pregnant?

I recently about a month ago begin to become more physical with my boyfriend however I was wondering do you feel anything when the guy ejaculates inside of you? I'm scared because I haven't had my period and does he feel anything if he knows he's going to ejaculate?

Men know when they are going to ejaculate. A pregnancy test is indicated if you are late for your period. Any time you have sex without birth control, you can become pregnant. Please go to your nearest family planning center as soon as possible. Take care of yourself.

Heredity and pregnancy

If it took my mom a long time to get pregnant, does that mean it may be a while before I get pregnant also?

No, in general your mother's history on length of time to get pregnant does not predict your experience. There are many variables that influence when a pregnancy occurs - there are so many factors that play into this that I could not begin to address this issue here. For an educated answer to this, please talk to your gynecologist - if you are trying to have a baby, there is so much you should be doing BEFORE you even get pregnant, such as vitamins and folic acid supplements. Please - if you plan to have a baby, go see your doctor and ask her/him these important questions. Take care.

Withdrawal and pregnancy

Hi. My boyfriend and I had sex last night and we used the withdrawal method. I am not on any other types of contraceptives. I had my last period 14 days ago and have regular cycles. So using this method what would you say were my chances of pregnancy?

One in four women will become pregnant using the withdrawal method. So your chances of experiencing a pregnancy are high with withdrawal especially at mid-cycle. If you do not wish to become pregnant, please consider talking to your local health care provider or family planning center about a more reliable form of contraception.

Skipped a pack of pills...am I pregnant?

I skipped a pack of oral contraceptives in February. I had a period at the end of February and started taking the pills again in March. In early March I had non-penetrative sex with a man and I am not sure if the pre-cum got close to my vagina. I have not had my period since February. What is the probability I might be pregnant?

You should have begun taking the pill on the first Sunday during or just after your period. If your period started on a Sunday, then you would have begun the pill pack that day. If your period started on a Thursday, then you would begin the pill on the following Sunday. If your period began on a Monday and ended on Saturday, then you would start the pill the following Sunday (the next day). If you followed this formula correctly, and if you were on the pill for two weeks before engaging in unprotected sex, then you should be fine.

If you did not follow the above procedure, and semen came in contact with the outside or inside of your vagina, then you should take a pregnancy test. Please feel free to call your local family planning center with any questions you have about the correct way to take the Pill. Take care.

Get pregnant while in menstrual cycle?

My girlfriend told me that a woman can't get pregnant from intercourse while in the menstrual cycle. I don't think so, but still I'm not very sure so that's why I ask you; is she correct?

It is possible for a woman to become pregnant while on her period. It is very unlikely, but if a women is at the end of her period and she has vaginal intercourse the sperm can live up to 3 days in the uterus and tubes waiting for an egg to fertilize. A women's ovary can release an egg at any point in a cycle. That is why natural family planning is such a challenging birth control method. If you are going to be sexually active, but do not wish to become pregnant, then please go to your local family planning center and talk to them about the best method for you.
