Ways to Give

Gifts of Securities

If you own long-term securities that have appreciated in value, you may prefer to contribute securities, rather than cash. In this way, you can avoid paying capital gains tax that would be due if you sold the securities. You can also take a tax deduction for the current fair market value of the securities given, while making a larger gift to the Family Planning Association of Maine than the realized cash value had you sold the securities.

Gifts through Bequests

Your will is a meaningful way to make a charitable gift of lasting value to the Family Planning Association of Maine.  Through a bequest provision, you can designate a specific amount of money, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after other bequests are satisfied. Adding a codicil to an existing will is a simple process that begins by making your intentions known to your attorney and having your will amended.

Gifts through Trusts

You can arrange to make a gift at a later time, through agreements such as Charitable Remainder Trusts or Charitable Lead Trusts. Remainder Trusts provide tax benefits and income for life in return for your contribution. Lead Trusts allow property or assets to remain in your family, with reduced taxes, while the income from them supports the Family Planning Association of Maine for a specified period of time. Lifetime incomes can be assured whether through annuity trusts or unitrusts, and they can be excellent methods to significantly reduce both income and estate taxes. Your attorney or accountant can assist you in creating such an instrument.

Gifts of Life Insurance

Life insurance may be an especially attractive gift vehicle if you own a policy that is no longer needed for its original purpose. In addition, those who qualify for low-cost premiums may find it more affordable and convenient to plan a significant gift to the Family Planning Association of Maine using life insurance. By naming the Family Planning Association of Maine as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you can take an immediate tax deduction for the accumulated cash value of the policy (if any) and a future deduction for any subsequent premiums which you pay. Gifts of life insurance are a splendid way to maximize a gift to the Family Planning Association of Maine.
